WWF Australia is asking for your support as they launch their Great Barrier Reef Appeal to try and stop the pollution of one of the world’s seven wonders. Marine parks cover 345,000km square across the Great Barrier Reef, yet still 14 million tonnes of mud, pesticides and harmful chemicals run into the reef waterways every year.

50% of all the coral in the reef has been lost due to pollution, with much of the area now rubble and algae. By reducing harmful fertiliser and pesticide use in farming, the critical habitats of such vulnerable species like Turtles, Dugongs and Dolphins will be allowed a better chance of survival.

The Great Barrier Reef is alive, just like you and me, and needs help to stop OUR pollution from killing it’s fragile existence. WWF Auction Family Tickets for Happy Feet Two Melbourne Premiere

WWF Australia has a family pass available for auction through ebay for the Happy Feet Two premiere on Tuesday 6th December 2011. The family pass admits four people to the red carpet event at the Village Cinemas on Chapel Street in South Yarra, with special guests including Director George Miller and comedian Robin Williams.

Bidding starts at just $49.99 for all four tickets on what promises to be an amazing event, with the funds raised going towards WWF’s ongoing conservation work in places like Antarctica and the Southern Ocean to create a system of marine parks to help protect the local wildlife. The film, starring the likes of Elijah Wood, Robin Williams, Brad Pitt and Matt Damon, doesn’t even come out until Boxing Day, so you will be seeing it a full 3 WEEKS before anyone else in the country (apart the other attendees of course!)

The Government Say Yes to a New Era

WWF Australia is delighted to announce that the Government has passed through Senate and into law the Clean Energy Future Bills. With climate change effecting the whole world, now is the time to act, before it’s too late.

The new climate legislation for Australia means -

A targeted 80% reduction in carbon pollution
The biggest polluters will have to pay for their output
An independent commission will help the government in the future

This great news is going to work really well, not just for the environment, but also the Australian economy. With 30 other countries taking part, as well as all EU members, putting a price on carbon pollution should see big businesses look more towards cleaner energy.

Thanks to this important first step, the Australian people can be proud that their government is planning for the future. Though there is still lots of work to be done, maybe one day we will see the target being 100% renewable energy in Australia. But for today let’s celebrate this landmark decision and look towards a cleaner, and brighter future.

With Australian politicians voting on one of the most important environmental laws in the countries history in next two months, the people of Australia need to know the facts about the benefits of a price on carbon pollution.

Help Save Perth Wildlife with WWF Australia

WWF Australia is asking you to make your voice heard and help them tell the Australian government that their Strategic Assessment for Perth must be used to protect the endangered species that call this area home. With it’s huge range of animals and plants that can only be found in this South West corner of Western Australia, it is imperative that this area of bushland is preserved.

The wetland system in south Perth is one of the most important area for waterbirds in the whole of Australia, giving home to some of the countries most unique animals and plants. Between 2001 to 2009, bushland in Perth has been cleared at a rate of over ten cricket fields a week and it needs to stop before it becomes too late.

WWF Concern at Widespread Turtle Deaths

WWF Australia officials are working with a number of experts to find out why a huge amount of sick and dead turtles have been washed ashore on the Queensland coast. A meeting on Friday 22nd July 2011 was held at Reef HQ in Townsville, with local veterinarians, turtle researchers and wildlife carers from across Australia attending to join forces to try and work out exactly why this has been happening.

The Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority Manager, Dr Mark Read, said -

We have concerns that the cumulative effects of several years of extreme weather and degradation of seagrass habitats will lead to a significant increase in marine turtle strandings on our beaches, including animals that will turn up injured or in very poor condition. Rehabilitation is an important component of an overall strategy for responding to these strandings, and the workshop will provide an excellent opportunity to share information and the latest research on turtle health, injury, and rehabilitation, and to network with other turtle specialists from around Australia.

The workshop was also the prefect meeting place for vets and biologists to discuss how best to give treatment to sick and injured turtles, and also how to cope with the potential flood of turtles that could continue to be washed up on Queensland beaches.

WWF Australia spokesperson, Cliff Cobbo, said -

We are seeing some fantastic sharing of knowledge between scientists, Traditional Owners and coastal communities as people come together to protect turtles from a growing range of threats. There has never been a more important time for this level of collaboration.

Help Protect the Snubfin Dolphin with WWF Australia

WWF Australia are asking you to stand up and be counted in the fight to urge environment minister Tony Burke to add this beautiful creature to the vulnerable list. It will only take a minute to add your name to the petition to help this threatened species from extinction via Australia’s premier environmental law.

With less than 800 of these animals left on the planet, something needs to be done, and it needs to be done NOW. There is virtually no protection for snubfin dolphins outside of the Great Barrier Reef, and within the coming weeks Mr. Burke has to decide on the level of protection they will receive from the Australian government. With less than 800 left on the planet, why not help make his mind up for him?

WWF Australia Concern at Toxic Pollution from Flooding

WWF Australia is warning that the flooding of the Queensland coast could well cause toxic pollution, which in turn will have a dramatic effect on the Great Barrier Reef’s coral and marine life.

To help protect communities in flood prone areas, the larger restoration of surrounding woodland is imperative to ease possible future water overspill.

WWF spokesman, Nick Heath, said -

In addition to the terrible costs to farmers and communities in Queensland, we will also see a major and extremely harmful decline in water quality on the Great Barrier Reef. Today’s floods are bigger, dirtier and more dangerous from excessive tree clearing, overgrazing and soil compaction. As a result less water infiltrates deep into the soil, increasing the size and erosive intensity of floods.

Sedimentary flow to the Great Barrier Reef has increased up to five times over the past 150 years, with inorganic nitrogen and phosphorous continuing to enter the Reef at enhanced levels. With climate change very likely to increase the chances of further flooding, now is the time to start planning for the next major event and help protect not just the people of Australia, but the habitat that surrounds them.
