Oxfam Urges Australians To Help Change The World In An Instant

Oxfam has released a new brand of instant coffee and is urging Australians to help change the world by purchasing it.

Julia Sumner, General Manager for Oxfam Australia Trading said that the easiest way for Australians to instantly change the world was by switching every day purchases such as coffee.

“With only 4 per cent of the coffee sold in Australia being Fairtrade certified, the scope for Australians to help change the world in an instant through their everyday purchases is huge. Fairtrade certification guarantees a minimum price for farmers and provides an additional sum of money, which can be used for community development projects such as clean water wells and sanitation facilities. Not only does Fairtrade coffee help improve the lives of farmers, their families and their communities, our new blend of Instant Coffee also tastes delicious.” Ms Sumner said.

The new instant coffee produced by Oxfam makes use of the finest beans and is sourced from a range of Fairtrade certified producers from Bolivia, Mexico, Peru and Honduras.

Café Orgánico Marcala S.A. (COMSA) from Honduras is one of the Fairtrade cooperative suppliers that provide the coffee beans used in Oxfam’s instant coffee.

COMSA received certification from Fairtade in 2005 after the cooperatives members learned that certification would result in a stable minimum price for their coffee beans as well as access to technical advice, business support, finance and specialist markets.

Enrique Mario Perez a COMSA board member said the accreditation was a strategic move that enabled all off the COMSA farmers and their families to enjoy an improved livelihood.

“The objective of our company is to improve the lives of every single one of us and our families … and we have found a strategic ally in Fairtrade. With that small producer label we receive a premium and invest a part of it in capacity building of our producers to improve production and productivity, to generate the change that we need here.” Mr. Perez said.
