UNICEF Bread for Good

UNICEF Australia has joined forces with celebrated chef Neil Perry as part of their ‘Bread for Good’ campaign. The charity initiative is aimed at restaurants across Australia to ask their diners during September to donate $2 for the normally complimentary bread to help raise much needed funds to help children in West Africa.

Last year’s Bread for Good campaign saw nearly 300 restaurants across NSW and Victoria take part, raising an astounding $85,000 for charity. This was then matched by AusAID and donated to help towards the food crisis in East Africa. Here’s hopping that this year’s effort is just as successful, and if you would like to register your restaurant to join in, simply click on the link below.

For every $2 that is collected, UNICEF can feed a hungry child in Africa for one day. A small price to pay to help feed one of the 18 million people who are suffering through a chronic food crisis.

Chief Executive of UNICEF Australia, Norman Gillespie, said

It takes so little to make a real impact.  A small amount really can mean the difference between life and death. With only $2 UNICEF can feed a hungry child for a day.vWe are so pleased to have the support of so many restaurateurs around Australia. This initiative has the potential to make a significant difference to the lives of so many who are needlessly suffering, and will also hopefully enhance the dining experience for patrons, knowing they are helping make a difference.

Countries in West Africa already suffer from incredibly high child mortality rates. One in five children dies before the age of five, many from preventable diseases and malnourishment. Now, severe drought in the Sahel region has made food unaffordable – leaving 4 million children at risk of malnutrition.

The Bread for Good project only started last year, but already has the support of The Sydney Morning Herald, The Age and The Good Food Guides. Restaurants that have already signed up for 2012 include –

  • Rockpool Bar and Grill
  • ARIA
  • Quay
  • Hungry Duck
  • Salle à Manger
  • and many more

Here’s hoping they have as such success as they did last year, and if you’re out and about in September why not take part in this amazing charity initiative with UNICEF Australia.
