Up to 12,000 Children Lives Saved Every Day

UNICEF Australia are absolutely over the moon with the release of the latest figures that show up to 12,000 children’s lives are being saved A DAY compared to 1990. This amazing piece of research from UNICEF and the World Health Organisation research shows that global child mortality is on the rise, with the number of preventable deaths for children under 5 reduced by 1000 a day in the last year alone!

The figures show that the number of children under five years of age that are dying each year has declined from over 12 million in 1990 to 7.6 million last year. These conclusive numbers show that around 12,000 more children’s lives are saved each day, amazing news that with continued support will continue to grow.

Chief Executive of UNICEF Australia, Norman Gillespie, said –

The news that the rate of child mortality is still dropping shows we are making progress even in the poorest places, but we cannot for a moment forget the chilling fact of around 21,000 children dying every day from preventable causes. Every child’s death is a tragedy. We must not lose momentum and continue to strive to reduce the number of preventable children’s deaths to zero. Focusing greater investment on the most disadvantaged communities will help us save more children’s lives, more quickly and more cost effectively.

Even though these figures are great news, the progress being made will still not meet the planned 66% reduction in the under-five mortality by 2015, as first proposed in the Millennium Development Goal 4. Around 50% of all under five deaths in the world took place in just five countries in 2010 –

  • India
  • Nigeria
  • Democratic Republic of Congo
  • Pakistan
  • China

More work needs to be done in these areas to dramatically cut the number of deaths to under 5 year olds. Many of these unnecessary deaths could be prevented with simple medicines which we expect as standard. Thanks to your continued support, UNICEF childrens charity will continue to work on the frontline in some of the world’s poorest countries to help put a stop to these unneeded fatalities.
